D&D Races

There are many character races to choose from in D&D, but it's probably best to start with the basics which include Human, Elven, and Dwarven. This is also a good rule of thumb for choosing the character type; the basics are the magic-users such as a Wizard or Sorceress, fighters such as a Knight, Thief or Ranger, and religious followers such as a Monk, Cleric or Paladin.
D&D races are actually just part of the "Character" as a whole being...like yourself. The Character and their Class/classification will help you define your character under its many races, many types, and alignment. There are three basic alignments Good, Neutral, and Evil; with Chaotic, Lawful and True being subcategories
Alignments also help to shape who your character is and what he or she will or will not do. For example, if your character is Lawful Good, he or she will never even consider breaking the law, but if he or she is Chaotic Good this is a conscious choice. It's fun to create and play characters as you can do things you would never dream of in real-world situations without fear of reprisals except those which can be exacted within the realms of D&D. NPCs
